Burraco is a card game for 2 or 4 players. It originates from South America and belongs to the Canasta family of card games. These days Burraco enjoys strong popularity in Italy. When played with 4 people, 2 teams of 2 players are formed.

The game is played with two complete decks of french cards complimented with 4 jokers. Each player receives a hand of 11 cards and two extra sets of 11 cards are set aside as 'pots'. Pots act as replacement hands later in the game. The remaining cards, placed face-down on the table, become the draw stack. The uppermost card of the draw stack is then taken and placed face-up on the table. This card then forms the play stack.

To take their turn, players begin by either drawing one card from the draw stack or by taking all of the cards in the play stack. Having drawn, the player can then meld cards to collect points for his/her team. Melding is achieved by placing card combinations, as explained below, on the playing field. To end his/her turn, a player must dispose of one unwanted card to the play stack.

Players can meld two different types of card combinations;

* Groups - 3 or more cards of the same face value, regardless of suit.
    e.g. Q-Q-Q or 5-5-5
* Sequences - 3 or more cards of the same suit in ascending order. Aces may feature either below the 2 or above the K in a sequence.
    e.g. ♣6-♣7-♣8-♣9
Melded cards combinations can be added to in later rounds. Once a meld has 7 or more cards, it is then termed a "buracco".

The game closes once a player/team has reached a pre-determined score limit (either 1, 505, 1005 or 2005 points). New rounds will be dealt until the set score limit has been reached.
