You can find information about multiplayer games here: How do multiplayer games work? In the lobby you can select which game style (German or French) you want to play under Settings.
You can open up a game round by clicking on the button “New Game”. You decide who is allowed to play on the table and the skill level of your opponents. Of course you can also join a round already opened by another player.
At the top right-hand edge of the table you can see the time remaining to take your turn and which player’s turn it is in the middle of the playing field. At the top, you can find the highest bid in the current round, the game value, and, if this is a trump game, the trump suit. Underneath the names of players, you can see the number of points that each player has scored in the current round by winning tricks. You can use the chat function to chat with your fellow players.
How the game works
Ulti is a game for 3 players and is played with 32 cards. The first single player receives 12 cards, while the other 2 players receive 10 cards each.
The ranking of the cards depends on whether or not a trump suit has been defined for the game.
Ranking with trump: Ace, 10, King, Over/Queen, Under/Jack, 9, 8, 7
Ranking without trump: Ace, King, Over/Queen, Under/Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7
A game announcement can consist of several components, and each component can be won or lost independently.
The single player that receives 12 cards must announce a game and drop 2 of his/her cards to form a hidden deck. The next player has the opportunity to pick up the hidden deck, announce a game with a higher value (“raise”) and drop two cards to the deck. If a player wants to pass, he/she does not pick up the cards and the auction continues with the next player. After three passes in succession the bidding is over and the player who has made the highest announcement has to play his/her game as solo player. It is also perfectly legal for a player to again pick up the deck and announce a higher game than before.
The winner of the bidding names the trump suit and specifies the game. If the game is announced as “Hearts”, the trump is already determined. Otherwise any suit can be chosen (including Hearts). A non-trump game is played in the case of a Durchmars or Open Durchmars and the negative games Betli and Open Betli.
The following announcements are possible (bid table):
40 - 100, 20 - 100, Durchmars and Open Durchmars replace the score for the basic game (which also cannot be “Kontra’d”). Every bid (except for Open Durchmars and Open Betli) can be raised by a "Heart" announcement. The Hearts will then be the trump suit and the game value will be doubled.
Kontra and Re-Kontra
A Kontra can be announced by a player immediately before playing his/her card for the first trick. After a Kontra, the next player may say ‘Re-Kontra' when it’s his/her turn to play a card. A Kontra doubles the value of the game, a Re-Kontra doubles the value again. For announcements that consist of several components (e.g. 40-100 Ulti), each component can be “Kontra’d” independently.
The solo player plays against 2 opponents acting as a team and plays the first card. Players must follow suit, play trumps and take tricks. You must play a card of the laid suit if you have one, otherwise you must play a trump card. Players are obliged to beat the highest card already played whenever they can. A player who has neither a trump nor a card of the laid suit may play any card.
Your own cards will be shown fanned out and you can place a card in the middle of the playing field simply by clicking on it. Should you win a trick, the cards will be laid face down next to your hand and you play the next card.
When the first single player wishes to announce a basic game without any additions, he/she must say “pass”, which means he/she wants to play the lowest possible game. To win the basic game, the single player has to receive more card points than his/her opponents. The basic game can be combined with Hearts and/or Ulti to give it a higher value.
40 - 100
As announcer, you must hold the King and Over of the trump suit and must reach 100 card points (including the 40 for the King and Over). Scoring additional 20s is not allowed. This announcement raises the score for the basic game.
20 - 100
Same as 40-100, but as a single player, you must have the King and Over of a non-trump suit. It is also not permitted to score additional 40s and 20s.
The single player has to win every trick. This announcement cancels the score for the basic game.
Same as Durchmars, but all cards are laid openly on the table after the first trick is finished.
The single player must win the last trick with the 7 of the trump suit. If you cannot win this trick or have to play the card earlier then the announcement is lost. Having bid Ulti, you are obliged to keep the trump 7 as long as legally possible, subject to the rules of following suit and taking tricks. The Ulti counts for 4 additional points.
The announcer may not take any trick. As soon as he/she has to take a trick the game is over.
Like Betli, but all cards are laid openly on the table after the first trick is finished.
Announcement of 20 or 40 during the game
Any player who holds an Over and King of the same suit can announce this. The player will then receive 20 or 40 extra card points (40 points if the Over and King match the trump suit). The announcement must be made when playing the first trick, but only in trump games. For the announced 20s or 40s to take effect, it is also necessary for the team to take at least one trick.
If in a game without announced 40-100, 20-100 or Durchmars either team reaches 100 card points, the score for the basic game is set to 2. All Kontras on the basic game remain.
If in a game without announced Durchmars either team takes all of the tricks, the score for the basic game is set to 3. All Kontras on the basic game remain.
If in a trump game without an announced Ulti, the trump 7 is played in the last trick, a score of 2 points is counted as either an unannounced Ulti win (the player who lays the trump 7 wins the last trick) or an unannounced Ulti loss (any other player wins the last trick).
End of the game
The team with the most tricks wins the game. Since a game announcement can consist of several components, and each component can be won or lost independently, the winner of the basic game is not automatically the winner of the whole game. Each component is undertaken separately.
After each round, the points window is displayed and you can choose if you want to play again or leave the playing field.
Aces and 10s are worth 10 points, while the remaining cards have no value. The last trick in a game is worth an additional 10 points. This means that there can never be a draw between the two teams.
