Belote is a popular French card game for 4 people, who play in 2 teams. It is related to Clobyosh, known in Jewish communities all over the world, and Klaverjassen from the Netherlands.
The aim of the game is to collect as many points as possible with tricks and - depending on the game - announcements along with your partner and be the first team to reach the point limit! You choose between classic Belote with or without announcements and Belote Contrée. If you have trump Queen and trump King in your hand (Belote and Re-Belote) you will receive additional points.
Feel the French flair of the game, take as many tricks as possible and snatch the most points along with your partner.
You can find details on multiplayer versions here: How do multiplayer games work?
In the lobby you can select which card pictures and game style you want to play under Settings.
You can start a game round by clicking on the button ‘New Game’. You decide who is allowed to play on the table and how high the stakes are. There are 3 game variations: you decide whether you prefer the classic Belote with or without announcements or the special version Contrée. Of course you can also join a round already opened by another player.
At the edge of the gaming table you can see which player's turn it is the forehand is marked with a flag symbol. At the right side you can see the remaining time to take your turn as well as the stake and your credit. You can also see which version of Belote is being played. The current point score as well as the trump is displayed near the player names. You can chat with your fellow players via the chat function.
Belote is a 4-player card game which is played using a 32-card deck (4 suits with Ace, Ten, King, Queen, Jack, Nine, Eight, Seven - in descending value). Please note that a different sequence applies for the trump suit: Trump Jack and Trump Nine are highly ranked, which means for trump cards the sequence Jack, Nine, Ace, Ten, King, Queen, Eight, Seven applies. The opposing players partner up. The game is played anti-clockwise. The aim is to reach the point limit first (501 points at Belote Classic and 701 points at Belote Contrée).
Determining the trump suit
To determine the trump suit at Classic Belote every player is dealt 5 cards Afterwards the first card of the stock is turned face-up. The player in the forehand can decide whether he/she wants to take this card. In doing so he/she clicks on 'Take' or 'Pass'. If the forhand fits it's the other player's turn. If a player takes a card this card is trump. if nobody wants to take the card in turn a different suit can be chosen as trump. The player who has determined trump has to take the card, which faces up. If all 4 players decide against a trump suit the cards will be dealt again and the forehand moves along to the next position.
If a trump suit has been chosen all players receive 3 more cards and the player who has determined trump gets 2 cards. Each player has now 8 cards.
Determining the trump suit at Belote Contrée
At Belote Contrée all cards will be dealt straightaway, which means every player gets 8 cards. Every player can now in turn decide whether he/she wants to call a trump suit. For this purpose he has to pick a game value and a suit. The game values range from 80 to 160 and increase in steps of 10 points. That way you announce how many points your team will achieve. If the next player also wants to pick a trump suit he has to announce a higher game value. If somebody announces 'Capot' his team has to take all tricks.
If a player does not want to annouce a trump suit he passes. If all players pass after an announcement the trump suit has been determined. The player who has determined the trump suit can now decide whether he wants to increase the game value again. Afterwards all players can click 'Contra' to double the game value. After Contra has been announced the player who picked the trump suit and his partner can announce 'Rekontra' and double the game value again.
The forehand starts after the trump suit has been determined. You must follow suit. If you cannot follow the suit played you have to play trump and - if possible - play a higher trump than the previous player. If your partner has already taken the trick you can play any card. That means you must follow trump and trick as long as the opposing team holds the trick. The player who takes the trick plays the next card.
At Belote Classic you can announce Sequences or Four of a Kind (Carrée) during the first trick A Sequence consists of at least 3 consecutive cards of the same suit, a Carrée consists of 4 cards of the same rank. The points of the announcement will be added to the points of the tricks. But these will only be credited to the team with the highest announcment, the announcement of the other team doesn't count.
The following order applies:
- Four of a Kind (Carrée) is always higher than a Sequence.
- Four of a Kind of a higher rank is better.
- In case of Sequences the length decides. If it is equal the Sequence with the higher rank wins. If this is also equal the Sequence in trump is higher. Otherwise the Sequence of the player scores who sits closer to the forehand.
Belote and Re-Belote can be announced with all the game variations (Classic and Contrée). If your hand contains the trump King and the trump Queen you announce 'Belote' as soon as you play the first card and 'Re-Belote' when you place the second card in the centre of the playing field.
End of the game
At the end of each round the points taken with tricks and announcements of every team will be added up. The team that reaches 501 points (Belote Classic) or 701 points (Belote Contrée) first wins.
Points will be given for all cards contained in the tricks.
Points given in the trump suit:
- Jack: 20 points
- Nine: 14 points
- Ace: 11 points
- Ten: 10 points
- King: 4 points
- Queen: 3 points
Points given for all other suits:
- Ace: 11 points
- Ten: 10 points
- King: 4 points
- Queen: 3 points
- Jack: 2 points
The following points will be awarded for all announcements:
- Belote/Re-Belote: 20 points
- Sequence of 3: 20 points
- Sequence of 4: 50 points
- Sequence of 5: 100 points
- 4 Jacks: 200 points
- 4 Nines: 150 points
- Other Four of a Kind: 100 points
Scoring for Belote Classic
At Belote Classic points won in tricks and announcements will be added up (only the announcement of the team with the highest announcement counts). Additional 10 points will be awarded for the team which has taken the last trick and 20 points for Belote/Re-Belote. If a team takes all the tricks (Capot) it receives 100 points instead of 10 for the last trick. If the team that has determined the trump suit achieves more points than the opposing team it has won and the overall point score of all the teams will be added to the respective total score. If this team has less points than its opponents the opposing team gets alle the points from tricks and announcements and the losers receive no points.
Scoring for Belote Contrée
At Belote Contrée the points from tricks will be added up. Additional 10 points will be awarded to the team which has taken the last trick and 20 points for Belote/Re-Belote. In case of 'Capot' (a team takes all the tricks) this team will be awarded 250 points. If the team that has determined trump has reached the announced point limit both teams will have this number of points added to their respective total score. The team that has determined trump will also receive the announced game value. If this team fails to reach the point limit all points will be awared to the opposing team.
